School Update

SCIENCE LABS

The Science Lab curriculum is a part of the general curriculum utilised by our teachers. Mona Preparatory School created an opportunity for labs to ensure there was a deliberate opportunity to conduct experiments with the students for increased understanding of the concepts taught. We will continue to facilitate these sessions online because the children will not have sessions in the Science Lab based on our procedures to contain our students in their classrooms for instructions (maintaining the bubble). In the absence of Mr Tracey (Teacher of Science), the Class Teachers (grades 3 to 6) will conduct the experiment element of the Science curriculum. This was the mode of operating before the introduction of the labs as a separate subject in a lab setting.

SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS (STEM) FOR KINDERGARTEN

Each kindergarten class is scheduled for one term of STEM classes during the academic year. Hence, a rotation schedule is developed to roster each class. The following classes have had STEM instructions in the Christmas Term, 2020 – K2 Gordon and K3 McFarlane. The other classes will be accommodated in the Summer Term, 2021.

THE USE OF DEVICES FOR THE FACE TO FACE ELEMENT OF THE BLENDED PROGRAMME

Students in grades 3 to 6 are required to take their fully charged devices to School, along with their headsets (AirPods, headphones etc.) to access the specialist subject teachers’ classes. This is a part of the School’s Covid-19 protocols because the children will not be allowed to physically go to the rooms of the specialist teachers.

We continue to wish for everyone a productive and rewarding term.

Shelter Programme

We have been making deliberate efforts to evaluate the teaching/learning process as we operate using the online modality. We have observed that while some of our students are managing very well with regard to targeted learning outcomes, unfortunately others require additional support to gain mastery competence with respect to learning objectives.

The administration has crafted a Shelter Programme to provide accommodation for students who need extra support. The tenets of the programme are highlighted below:

  1. Early online reinforcement of concepts with small groups.
  2. Utilization of Break-out Rooms for one and one student support.
  3. Deliberate inclusion of students with challenges in class discussions.
  4. Opportunities for face to face support.

Please feel free to contact the Class Teacher to determine if your child/ward requires this special accommodation.

Welcome Letter

As we commence the 2021 Easter Term, we wish that every household will experience a very happy and prosperous New Year. We have learnt very valuable lessons in the Christmas Term of 2020 and we sincerely hope that the experiences garnered will assist us greatly in dealing with the challenges that are associated with operating in a pandemic.

Our letter dated December 10, 2020 highlighted our proposed plan to commence blended classes for the Easter Term (see proposed schedule below).

Wednesday, January 6, 2021        Classes resume for all online Blended classes (Grades 4, 5 & 6)

Monday, January 25, 2021            Blended classes (Grades 1, 2, 3)

Monday, February 1, 2021            Blended classes (Grades 1, 2, 3)

Monday, February 8, 2021            Kindergarten I, 2, 3

Given the level of uncertainty that confronts us daily in this pandemic, it is sincerely our hope that our proposed schedule for the face-to-face element of the blended modality will materialise. The option to participate in online only classes is still available to all parents/guardians who desire to have their children remain online when we commence blended learning.

We will continue to be guided by public health advisories from the Ministry of Health and bulletins prepared by the Ministry of Education. Nevertheless, we will examine our unique context as we prepare for the eventual return to the campus. Parents/Guardiansof students who will be participating in face-to-face classes will be required to complete an indemnity form. The form has been attached to this correspondence for easy reference.

The current situation with the new strain of the COVID-19 virus is serious cause for concern and so we are committed to making responsible and informed decisions that will be in the best interest of all stakeholders. Therefore, we will continue to provide updates so that every parent/guardian will obtain current information regarding the status of our programme.

We value all our stakeholders and we understand that the challenges in this climate have been and will be impacting everyone in our community. Therefore, we are mindful that continuous support and dialogue is necessary in dealing with the demands that are thrust upon each household. Parents/Guardians who need to express concerns or make queries are encouraged to communicate with the administrators who are available to address challenges or queries using email: iserve@monaprep.eduj.m or telephone: (876) 927- 2222, 927-1507 or 927-1041.

SYMPTOMS OF CORONA VIRUS

Signs and symptoms of infection with the new coronavirus may appear two to 14 days after exposure and can include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

The severity of the new coronavirus symptoms can range from very mild to severe, even death. Although understanding of this disease continues to grow, most people with severe illness have been of an older age or had other significant existing medical conditions. This is similar to what is seen in people who have severe infections with other respiratory illnesses, such as influenza.

PREVENTION

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth if your hands aren't clean.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Avoid sharing dishes, glasses, bedding and other household items if you're sick.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces you often touch.
  • Stay home from work, school and public areas if you're sick.

It’s also important to disinfect all the common areas in your home on a regular basis. Get in the habit of cleaning shared surfaces first with soap and water, then with a diluted solution of bleach and water. If you or your child/ward experience symptoms such as a fever, cough or shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, stay home from school or work. You should continue avoiding contact with others as this will help to avoid spreading the disease.

This we believe will assist greatly in protecting our children. In addition, if a child is suspected of having the Coronavirus, we ask that the parent/guardian seek immediate medical attention and ensure that the child is quarantined for the duration that is specified by a medical personnel. No child having Coronavirus symptoms will be accepted at school.

2020-02-05

ADMINISTRATION OF THE PRIMARY EXIT PROFILE (PEP) EXAMINATION

For the academic year 2019/2020, the first component to be tested is the Ability Test for Grade 6 which will be administered, Tuesday, February 25, 2020. It will measure students’ ability to reason with words and quantities (Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning). It represents 30% of students’ profile. This test consists of 40 Single Select Multiple Choice Items. Students will complete the test in Test booklets (similar in layout as in the Practice papers distributed to the system), and not on a separate answer sheet.

GENERAL TIPS FOR PREPARING FOR 2020 PEP – ABILITY TEST

1. Students should gather materials needed for the examination before the day arrives. Students should gather all the tools and items they will need for their examination from the previous night to avoid searching for things on the morning of the examination. Searching may cause the child to become flustered.

2. Students should not study on the night before the examination. This may result in an overload on the brain and may cause temporary memory loss.

3. Students should be encouraged to go to bed early the night before the exam. A good night's rest is important to the students functioning at their best the next day.

4. Students should have a healthy breakfast on the morning of the exam, but should not over eat.

5. Parents/Guardians must ensure that students get to the venue at least 30 minutes before the start of the examination. They should arrive at the exam centre early on the morning of the exam. This will help them to relax and settle down and minimize nervousness. Arriving just in time to go into the exam room, or worse arriving late may cause you to get agitated and unnecessarily nervous.

6. Remind students that on entering the examination room they should remain calm and pretend they are in a regular class.

7. Students should read examination questions carefully before providing answers. Parents/Guardians should encourage students to read options given carefully before selecting their answers. Remind students that if they select an incorrect answer they are to erase clearly then make their next choice.

8. Students should be informed that the Ability Test contains 40 multiple choice questions. There is only one answer for each question. Encourage them to make sure they select ONLY ONE answer for each question.

9. Remember to check and ensure that they have answered all forty (40) questions for the test.

10. Please ensure that they shade their answers in the booklet.

11. Students are not to make stray marks on the booklets. They are to use the rough work paper provided.

12. Encourage students to use time wisely, do not hurry because persons sitting next to them have finished.

13. Remind the students to insert their rough work paper into the booklets.

TIPS FOR STUDENTS

• Check the booklet to ensure that you have received the correct booklet.

• Answer all questions in the booklet. There are 40 Multiple Choice questions in this test. There is only one answer to each question.

·        Remain calm and obey the instruction given by the Presiding Examiners.

• Do not communicate with other students in the examination.

• Do not spend too much time on one question. If you are having challenges with a problem, leave it and come back to it later, if there is enough time.

• Check over your test after you are done with it. If you have time, redo the problems to see if you come up with the same answers the second time around.

• Look for careless mistakes. If you want to change your answer, make sure to erase your answers carefully and reshape your new answer.

• Ensure that you read the directions correctly; that you calculated using the correct numbers.

• Remember to insert your rough work paper into your test booklets.

• Do not leave the examination with any material. Make sure you hand in all papers,
